Great Leaders often become unpopular

President Bush is definitely one of those whom we can say didn’t back down from his commitment from keeping Americans safe the last seven years of presidency even if it cost him his popularity. No one who takes on the mantle of leadership does so because they want to be unpopular. But there are times when a leader cannot avoid unpopularity. By pointing out the obvious, a leader sometimes finds it is lonely at the top.

George W. Bush hopes history will see him as a president who  liberated millions of Iraqis and Afghans, who worked towards peace and who never sold his soul for political ends.”I’d like to be a president (known) as somebody who liberated 50 million people and helped achieve peace,” Bush said in excerpts of a recent interview released by the White House Friday.

“I would like to be a person remembered as a person who, first and foremost, did not sell his soul in order to accommodate the political process. I came to Washington with a set of values, and I’m leaving with the same set of values.”

He also said he wanted to be seen as a president who helped individuals, “that rallied people to serve their neighbor; that led an effort to help relieve HIV/AIDS and malaria on places like the continent of Africa; that helped elderly people get prescription drugs and Medicare as a part of the basic package.”

Bush added that every day during his eight-year presidency he had consulted the Bible and drawn comfort from his faith.

“I would advise politicians, however, to be careful about faith in the public arena,” the US leader said in the interview with his sister Doro Bush Koch recorded as part of an oral history program known as Storycorps.

As his second term in office draws to an end, Bush joked he would miss some of the trappings that come with the presidency such as trips on Air Force One, never being stuck in a traffic jam, and the president’s residence at Camp David.

But he said he was glad to be stepping back into the shadows.

“Frankly, I’m not going to miss the limelight all that much. It’s been a fabulous experience to be the president … But it will be nice to see the Klieg lights shift somewhere else.”

The interview, which Bush recorded with First Lady Laura Bush, will be stored in the library of Congress and a museum devoted to the Bush presidency.

“It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the Providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humble to implore His protection and favor.”

George Washington October 3, 1789

14But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.

2 Corinthians 2:14

“When we review the calamities which afflict so many other nations, the present condition of the United States affords much matter of consolation and satisfaction. Our exemption hitherto from foreign war, an increasing prospect of the continuance of that exception, the great degree of internal tranquility we have enjoyed, the recent confirmation of that tranquility by the suppression of an insurrection which so wantonly threatened it, the happy course of our public affairs in general, the unexampled prosperity of all classes of our citizens, are circumstances which peculiarly mark our situation with indications of the Divine beneficence toward us. In such a state of things it is in an especial manner our duty as a people, with devout reverence and affectionate gratitude, to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God and to implore Him to continue and confirm the blessings we experience.

Deeply penetrated with this sentiment, I, George Washington, President of the United States, do recommend to all religious societies and denominations, and to all persons whomsoever, within the United States to set apart and observe Thursday, the 19th day of February next as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, and on that day to meet together and render their sincere and hearty thanks to the Great Ruler of Nations for the manifold and signal mercies which distinguish our lot as a nation, particularly for the possession of constitutions of government which united and by their union establish liberty with order; for the preservation of our peace, foreign and domestic; for the seasonable control which has been given to a spirit of disorder in the suppression of the late insurrection, and generally for the prosperous course of our affairs, public and private; and at the same time humbly and fervently to beseech the kind Author of these blessings graciously to prolong them to us; to imprint on our hearts a deep and solemn sense of our obligations to Him for them; to teach us rightly to estimate their immense value; to preserve us from the arrogance of prosperity, and from hazarding the advantages we enjoy by delusive pursuits; to dispose us to merit the continuance of His favors by not abusing them; by our gratitude for them, and by a correspondent conduct as citizens and men; to render this country more and more a safe and propitious asylum for the unfortunate of other countries; to extend among us true and useful knowledge; to diffuse and establish habits of sobriety, order, morality, and piety, and finally, to impart all the blessings we possess, or ask for ourselves, to the whole family of mankind.

“In testimony whereof I have caused the seal of the United States of America to be affixed to these presents, and signed the same with my hand.

11In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature,[a] not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, 12having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

Angel Tree Christmas gives churches and individuals an opportunity to share Christ’s love by helping to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the children of prisoners. Participating in Angel Tree is a powerful way for The Rock Christian Fellowship and local community to lovingly answer the biblical call to minister to the least of these. The Rock Christian Fellowship has made an annual commitment to this highly rewarding program, and recognize it as a way to care for some of the most overlooked members of our culture. This year we have been assigned over 30 Children from our community who has one or both parents in prison this holiday season.

Our ANNUAL Angel Tree Christmas Party will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2008.

If you would like to participate in this very rewarding opportunity please get in touch with me ASAP. Will you consider helping in the following ways.

The Hispanic National Bar Association has just sent out a press release gently reminding Barack Obama that he owes them — and they are not going to let him forget it:

HNBA Congratulates President-Elect Barack Obama and Urges Appointment of Hispanics to the Federal Judiciary and Executive Branch

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Last week, Ramona E. Romero, the HNBA National President, formally congratulated President-Elect Barack Obama and Vice President-Elect Joe Biden for their victory in the 2008 presidential election. In her letter, Ms. Romero noted that two-thirds of the Latino electorate joined President-Elect Obama’s diverse base of supporters to contribute to his win on November 4th. The Latino vote was key in battleground states such as Florida, New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada. In fact, at least 10 million Latino voters cast ballots, an increase in participation of 32% from the 2004 Presidential Election.

I found this article to be helpful.

Marry. Cry. Rejoice. Buy.

And do politics as though you were not doing politics | John Piper

Politics is like marrying and crying and laughing and buying. We should do it, but only as though not doing it. Here is a strange text:

The appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away (1 Corinthians 7:29-31).

This sounds bizarre. First it says: Don’t flee the world. Marry. Cry. Rejoice. Buy. Deal. But then: Do it all as if you weren’t doing it. So with politics. How does this work?

Let those who deal with the world do it as though they had no dealings with it. Yes, we deal with the world. But there are unseen things that are vastly more precious than the world. The full passions of our heart are attached to something greater—God and His purposes. We will inherit the world soon enough. For now we deal with it to show that Christ, not the world, is our treasure.

So it is with politics. We deal with the system, the news, the candidates, the issues, the outcomes. But they are not the great thing in our lives. Christ is. And Christ will be ruling over His people with perfect supremacy after every election and after the vanishing of every nation.

So we do not revel or retreat. Our reward is in heaven. Our comforts are great. Our task is clear. Make much of Christ, not Caesar.

Please pray for the family and friends of Max Torres. Max was an inspiration, a life-long youth worker and justice advocate who spent his time, treasure, and talent on behalf of the least, last, and lost. We met on several ministry occasions, the most recent was at the annual gathering of Youth Workers (UYWI). He went home to Jesus last night after a fatal motorcycle accident near his home in Houston. Max will be missed, but he will join the many who have gone before us and will be one more voice calling us forward. Funeral information and more to come.

Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Rediscovering God in America: Reflections on the Role of Faith in Our Nation's History

A book I highly recommend. This will make a perfect stocking stuffer for any book lover/ reader. Anti-God types have been trying to obscure and completely erase the fact that America was founded as a CHRISTIAN nation and on Christian principals. Newt takes the reader on a stroll through the nation’s capital to each monument and reveals this history through the writings of the founders themselves. A very good read you can finish if you have a few spare hours.  As matter of fact, I am currently writing a short study guide for our world view class at The Rock Christian Academy.

Reading habits in our home:

I have recently been encouraged that my 2 older sons are discovering a habit of reading, I started them by buying superstar autobiographies, Sports Illustrated for Kids, and a few other easy reads. Rediscovering God in America will be the next small book we will be reading. I think I put this on my Christmas list of gifts for close friends of the family.

A look inside the pages…

This brief mandate by Gingrich, the architect of 1994’s conservative    congressional manifesto “The Contract with America,” opens with a battle cry: “There is no attack on American culture more deadly and more historically dishonest than the secular effort to drive God out of America’s public life.” The book’s arguments are predictable: Gingrich claims that references to God are sprinkled everywhere in our nation’s founding documents; that most Americans believe in God; and our classrooms and courtrooms are the laboratories where such belief is being irrevocably eroded. He trots out quotations from founding fathers that suggest their allegiance to Christianity or at least to theism, but conveniently ignores evidence that some of these men—particularly Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson—believed religion should have little, if any, role in the nation’s government.
