Those who have not shut down their doors to the many drug addicts here in Espanola and Rio Arriba have gotten overlooked once again, while local health providers and agencies seeking national media for the drug epidemic and scarcity of treatment for addicts in Espanola. They are very well aware and closely related to those who still remain in the trenches offering a solution to the epidemic. They themselves have many times referred their clients they turn away on a regular basis to RCF a because of their own doors remain shut. The Rock Christian Fellowship, is a very progressive congregation in Espanola, NM who currently provides over 50 beds for men and women in this community while providers advocate for programs and continue to paint a very grim picture. What has been done with all the help and resources that have come in the past?

Many of the people who have been helped by this congregation and its programs were interviewed at RCF when these same local providers came to us in an attempt to publish this story. Where are their stories, the ones who have changed, and have overcome this tradition?

Erik Response…Was responsible for writing this article.
Dear Mr. Arellano,

I’m sorry that you were so disappointed in the article. I know that a number of people have overcome drugs, including many in your program, which I actually visited. I spoke with Pastor Naranjo but for some reason there were no current residents available to speak with me at the time. In any case, unfortunately, the evidence suggests that so far, for everyone in the county who stops, someone else is starting; the overdose numbers have if anything risen a bit in the last few years. In the limited space I was given I had to skip over several aspects of the problem in Rio Arriba.

I won’t be doing anything more right now, but perhaps at some point I can revisit the issues and concentrate more on solutions. Ideally, of course, the state and county would do a more systematic job of prevention.

Best wishes and keep up the good work,

Erik Eckholm
